Looking after yourself without overcomplicating it

Start with your own skin

Dry, oily or sensitive skin does not call for the same textures or the same active ingredients. The advice on these pages starts from there and tries one product at a time. One well-chosen cream does more than a shelf of half-used jars.

When to see a dermatologist

Brown spots that change in appearance, breakouts that never clear or dandruff that keeps coming back: these signs deserve a doctor's opinion before you try a new product.

Give your skincare time to work

Skin renews itself slowly, and a serum rarely shows results in its first week. Switching products too often blurs the picture and can irritate the skin. It is better to note what you apply and take stock after a month of regular use.

Hydrate, protect, soothe: the basics of comfortable skin

Before choosing a cream or a serum, it helps to know your skin type. A tissue pressed lightly on the face in the morning gives a first clue: traces of sebum on the forehead and nose point to combination skin, while no trace at all and a feeling of tightness suggest dry skin. This profile shifts with the seasons, stress, age or hormonal changes. It guides the choice of texture, from a light gel to a rich balm, and of active ingredients: hyaluronic acid to hold water in the skin, vitamin C for a brighter complexion, a tinted serum for light, natural coverage.

A short routine is often enough: a gentle cleanse, a suitable treatment, a moisturiser and sun protection in the morning to keep brown spots at bay. Rough bumps on the arms respond to regular, gentle exfoliation rather than scrubbing. Hair follows the same logic, with a shampoo chosen for the scalp, whether oily, dry or prone to dandruff, and a brush that spares the lengths. New active ingredients are best introduced gradually, every other evening at first. For redness that lingers, spots that change or breakouts that persist, a dermatologist remains the right person to ask.
